About Oats

Oats consistently rank first among cereal grains in deer forage preference trials, providing soft, leafy, high-protein growth that deer hammer from the moment of germination. In the South and border states, oats produce through the entire fall-winter season; in northern states (Zone 5 and colder), oats typically winterkill in December, so cereal rye is usually added to the blend for continuity. Crude protein in oat forage routinely exceeds 25%, with acid detergent fiber below 20%, making it one of the most nutritious and palatable options available.

How much Oats seed per acre?

The standard broadcast seeding rate for Oats is 120–150 lbs per acre, dropping to about 75 lbs per acre when drilled. 120–150 lb/ac broadcast pure stand; 70–80 lb/ac drilled. In perennial clover/chicory blends, reduce to 40–50 lb/ac to avoid smothering small-seeded species. Oats produce heavy early forage but may winterkill in Zone 5 and north. The calculator above scales this to your exact plot size and converts it into the number of retail bags to buy.

When to plant Oats

Oats is a cool-season crop. In the northern US, plant in Aug (for fall plot; winterkill is expected in North Zone 5+) or Apr–May (spring plot); farther south, plant in Sep–Oct. Sow it 1.5" deep and plan on 7–14 to germination; heavy deer use within 30–45 days.

Soil, pH & fertilizer

Aim for a soil pH near 6.5(don't go below ~6). 300–400 lb/ac 13-13-13 at planting. Maintain high soil fertility. N top-dress of 50–80 lb/ac actual N in 4–6 weeks accelerates growth. Not sure where your soil sits? Read our soil test & lime guide.

Oats blends well with crimson clover, Austrian winter peas, cereal rye, ladino clover, brassica blends if you want a more diverse, resilient plot.

Oats FAQ

How much Oats seed do I need per acre?
Broadcast Oats at about 120–150 lbs per acre, or 75 lbs per acre if you drill it. 120–150 lb/ac broadcast pure stand; 70–80 lb/ac drilled. In perennial clover/chicory blends, reduce to 40–50 lb/ac to avoid smothering small-seeded species. Oats produce heavy early forage but may winterkill in Zone 5 and north.
When should I plant Oats?
In the northern US plant in Aug (for fall plot; winterkill is expected in North Zone 5+) or Apr–May (spring plot); in the South plant in Sep–Oct. Expect 7–14 to germination; heavy deer use within 30–45 days.
What soil pH does Oats need?
Oats does best at a soil pH around 6.5 (minimum ~6). 300–400 lb/ac 13-13-13 at planting. Maintain high soil fertility. N top-dress of 50–80 lb/ac actual N in 4–6 weeks accelerates growth.
Do deer like Oats?
Deer preference: high — consistently the #1 ranked cereal grain in deer preference trials; crude protein often above 25%.
