Why lime matters more than fertilizer
Soil pH controls whether your plants can actually use the nutrients in the ground. In acidic soil — where most untouched dirt sits, around pH 5.0–5.8 — fertilizer gets chemically locked up and the plot underperforms no matter how much you feed it. Lime fixes the pH so everything else works. It's the highest-return $15 you'll spend on a plot, and it starts with a soil test.
How the estimate works
The calculator multiplies a standard extension lime rate for your current pH band by your acreage, then converts tons to 40 lb bags. It targets pH 6.5, the sweet spot for clover, brassicas, and cereal grains. Treat the result as a planning figure — soil texture changes it (sandy soils need less, clay more), and your soil-test report will give an exact recommended rate.
Food Plot Lime FAQ
- How much lime does a food plot need per acre?
- It depends on how acidic your soil is. Roughly: 1 ton/acre to raise pH from 6.0 to 6.5, ~1.5 tons from 5.5, ~2.5 tons from 5.0, and 3–4 tons below 5.0. These are general ag-lime rates for mineral soil — a soil test gives the exact recommendation for your dirt.
- How many bags of lime are in a ton?
- A ton is 2,000 lbs, so that's fifty 40 lb bags or forty 50 lb bags per ton. Pelletized lime usually comes in 40 lb bags; bulk ag lime is sold by the ton delivered, which is far cheaper per pound if you can get a truck to the plot.
- When should I apply lime to a food plot?
- As early as possible — lime takes 6–12 months to fully react and raise pH. Apply it the fall before a spring planting, or at least a few months ahead. Incorporating it into the soil works faster than leaving it on the surface.
- Pelletized vs ag lime — which is better?
- They raise pH the same amount per pound of equivalent material. Pelletized lime spreads evenly through a standard spreader and is convenient for small plots; bulk ag (ground) lime is much cheaper by the ton and better for large acreage if you can get it delivered and spread.
