About Cereal Rye
Cereal rye is the most cold-tolerant and drought-tolerant of the cool-season cereal grains, germinating reliably at lower temperatures and producing forage faster than wheat or oats after a late planting. It tolerates lower soil pH than other cereals (as low as 5.5), making it a practical choice on plots where lime is still working. Deer rank it slightly below oats in preference trials but use it heavily throughout fall and winter, particularly in the North where oat stands can be killed by severe cold.
How much Cereal Rye seed per acre?
The standard broadcast seeding rate for Cereal Rye is 120–150 lbs per acre, dropping to about 75 lbs per acre when drilled. 120–150 lb/ac broadcast alone; 70–80 lb/ac drilled alone. In a blend with clover/chicory, reduce to 30–40 lb/ac broadcast. Rye competes aggressively — do not over-seed in a mix. When to plant Cereal Rye
Cereal Rye is a cool-season crop. In the northern US, plant in late Aug–Sep; farther south, plant in Sep–Oct. Sow it 1.5" deep and plan on 7–14 to germination; usable forage in 30–45 days.
