About Buckwheat
Buckwheat is a warm-season annual forb that establishes more quickly than almost any other food plot crop, germinating in a few days and producing edible forage within 70–80 days. Its primary value is as a rapid-establishment nurse crop, soil improvement species, or early-summer filler in a rotation while slower perennials establish. Deer preference is moderate — buckwheat is most useful in areas where summer food options are limited, and it should not be expected to attract deer with the same intensity as legumes or brassicas.
How much Buckwheat seed per acre?
The standard broadcast seeding rate for Buckwheat is 40–50 lbs per acre, dropping to about 33 lbs per acre when drilled. 40–50 lb/ac broadcast pure stand; 30–35 lb/ac drilled. Buckwheat establishes very rapidly — reduce rate significantly in a blend to prevent it from crowding slower species. Not a high-density deer food; best used as nurse crop or filler. The calculator above scales this to your exact plot size and converts it into the number of retail bags to buy.
When to plant Buckwheat
Buckwheat is a warm-season crop. In the northern US, plant in May–Aug; farther south, plant in Apr–Sep. Sow it 3/4" deep and plan on 70–80.
Soil, pH & fertilizer
Aim for a soil pH near 6.5(don't go below ~6). 20–30 lb/ac actual N; minimum 40 lb/ac P2O5 and 40 lb/ac K2O. Responds well to P. Does not require high fertility and tolerates poor soils. Not sure where your soil sits? Read our soil test & lime guide.
Buckwheat blends well with sunflowers, cowpeas, grain sorghum, sunn hemp if you want a more diverse, resilient plot.
