About Switchgrass

Switchgrass is a tall-growing native warm-season perennial grass planted almost exclusively for thermal cover, screening, and bedding habitat rather than as a food source — it provides little forage value to deer. A mature stand (typically requiring two full growing seasons) forms dense, 5–8-foot-tall clumps that deer use as bedding cover and movement corridors, making it a critical component of a complete habitat management plan. Establishment is slow and requires patience; weed control during the first season is the primary management challenge, and dormant seeding or very early spring seeding is preferred over late-spring planting.

How much Switchgrass seed per acre?

The standard broadcast seeding rate for Switchgrass is 6–8 lbs per acre, dropping to about 5 lbs per acre when drilled. These are PLS (pure live seed) rates. Raw seed rates may be higher depending on germination and purity. Note: switchgrass establishment is notoriously slow — expect a full 2 growing seasons before a solid stand. Dormant-seeded late winter or early spring (before last frost) gives best results. The calculator above scales this to your exact plot size and converts it into the number of retail bags to buy.

When to plant Switchgrass

Switchgrass is a warm-season crop. In the northern US, plant in late Feb–May (dormant or early spring seeding preferred); farther south, plant in Mar–May. Sow it 1/8" deep and plan on Full stand: 2 growing seasons.

Soil, pH & fertilizer

Aim for a soil pH near 6.5(don't go below ~5.8). Minimal fertility needed at establishment; excess N promotes weed competition before stand is established. After stand is established, 50–80 lb/ac actual N annually maintains vigor. Not sure where your soil sits? Read our soil test & lime guide.

Switchgrass FAQ

How much Switchgrass seed do I need per acre?
Broadcast Switchgrass at about 6–8 lbs per acre, or 5 lbs per acre if you drill it. These are PLS (pure live seed) rates. Raw seed rates may be higher depending on germination and purity. Note: switchgrass establishment is notoriously slow — expect a full 2 growing seasons before a solid stand. Dormant-seeded late winter or early spring (before last frost) gives best results.
When should I plant Switchgrass?
In the northern US plant in late Feb–May (dormant or early spring seeding preferred); in the South plant in Mar–May. Expect Full stand: 2 growing seasons.
What soil pH does Switchgrass need?
Switchgrass does best at a soil pH around 6.5 (minimum ~5.8). Minimal fertility needed at establishment; excess N promotes weed competition before stand is established. After stand is established, 50–80 lb/ac actual N annually maintains vigor.
Do deer like Switchgrass?
Deer preference: seasonal — not a food crop; used almost exclusively as screening cover and bedding habitat; deer bed in dense stands; minimal forage value.
